Instagram Is Changing The Moment
I profiled one of the earliest organic stars on Instagram: a then-unknown southern California father, amateur photographer and college professor by the name of Dirk Dallas. He became an early visual storytelling sensation on the app by pushing the limits of his iPhone camera. Eventually, Dallas began landing marketing gigs for companies like Toyota at time when the three-year old social network was just becoming an avenue for such breakout careers.
Yet for Dallas, who saw his follower count balloon to hundreds of thousands of fans, the app was as much a platform for positivity and opportunity as it was a gnawing force reshaping how he lived his life. Because Instagram transforms the photograph from a captured scene into stamp of personal experience, Dallas found himself at a crossroads between how he wanted to live and what he wanted his audience to imagine.
